Vargas speaking to votersJohn Vargas is the youngest of four children born to Maria and Alejandro Vargas. From day one, John has called the city of Hawthorne home.

John began his educational career at York Elementary where he attended Kindergarten.  He attended elementary/middle school at St. Joseph’s School and ultimately graduated high school from the California Academy of Mathematics and Science (CAMS).  Then, through the hard work and support of his parents and siblings, John graduated from UCLA with a B.A. in Political Science in only three years.

After graduation, John began work as lead teacher for an after school program in Playa Del Rey. It is there where John developed a passion for education.  From there, John moved on to become a writer and editor for English Education Curriculum International (EECI), where he wrote and edited English Language Learning Curriculum materials for the foreign market.

In 2005, working with a core group of founders, John began the long arduous two-year journey of creating and establishing an independent public school in the Los Angeles Unified School District.  In September of 2007, Global Education Academy  opened its doors in South Los Angeles.

After serving as Development Director for Global Education Academy, John was recruited by Excellent Education Development (ExED) to serve as Vice President of School Finance for charter schools in the LA area.

In addition, John has worked as Executive Director of Full Circle Learning Academy a small K-8 public charter school in Los Angeles.  Here John was in charge of all of the school’s operations, focusing on budgeting, accounting, Human Resources, legal and procurement.

John is currently serving as Business and Operations Manager for Crown Preparatory Academy, a high performing public middle school academy in Los Angeles, where he ensures the school is fiscally sound and teachers have the resources they need to get the job done in the classroom.

John has dedicated his life to supporting quality public education and will continue to do so in the future.
